J & D Temptation Habano Claro Churchill Cigar Review

June 12, 2011

Wrapper: Nicaragua
Ring Gauge:

While I tend to gravitate towards premium name brands, I am always on the look out for great independent cigars. In April I came across a new cigar called The Temptation. Distributed by J & D Cigar Co., The Temptation Habano Claro is hand-made in Nicaragua by master tocedores (rollers). It is available in five different vitolas (shapes) and has had a nice little buzz heading into its release. Needless to say I was very excited to light this smoke up.

Rocky Patel Autumn Collection 2009 Robusto Cigar Review

June 9, 2011

Binder: Cameroon Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Ring Gauge:

I really have an affinity for Rocky Patel smokes. Their cigars are very much premium but are priced very consumer friendly. I’ve come to really favor the Rocky Patel Connecticut, and The Decade. A while ago someone gifted me the Rocky Patel Autumn Collection 2009 Robusto. For some reason I always passed by it when I would reach into my humidor. After six months of aging I smoked it earlier this week and I found it to be a very fine cigar.

The Nestor Miranda brand is very highly respected in the cigar world. It should be as it is a collaborative effort from Nestor Miranda and Jose Pepin Garcia. May 9th 2011 was Nestor Miranda Cigar Day and all authorized dealers were offering a free Nestor Miranda cigar with any purchase. So I supported and was gifted with the Nestor Miranda Art Deco Coffee Break.

5 Vegas Relic Perfecto Cigar Review

April 18, 2011

Binder: Dominican Piloto
Wrapper: Dominican Corojo
Filler: Dominican Piloto (’96), Dominican Corojo, Dominican Criollo
Length: 5 5/8
Ring Gauge: 54
In cigar culture it is a great gesture to give another smoker a cigar to try out. Through this smoker etiquette I’ve received a bunch of sticks I have grown to appreciate or to stay away from. A while ago my good friend gifted me the 5 Vegas Relic Perfecto. It is an all Dominican puro that had some good and bad points to it.
Physically the 5 Vegas Relic Perfecto is a small but thick cigar. The wrapper is a Dominican Corojo that has a very grainy feel to it. The color is a dark brown that is not uniform as there are several blotches throughout. There is one big vein at the top too.
Another disappointment is the burn. After clipping the foot and lighting this Relic up, I had a really tough time with the draw. The draw was super tight and I had to pull on it with all my lung capacity to get a decent amount of smoke. After getting this cigar open with touch ups from my lighter I saw the ash was a very dull grey. Additionally the ash was flaky and fragile. Admittedly when I got into the middle of this cigar all my aforementioned complaints shaped up.

Jim Belushi and friends Celebrate “Born Yesterday” at Nat Sherman

April 16, 2011

Bill Sherman, Robin Bronck, Jim Belushi

Jim Belushi was like a kid at a candy store smoking stogies at Nat Sherman with 6 beautiful women that call themselves ‘The Bambi killers’ and ‘The Defenders’ co-star Tanya Fischer. The air filled with cigar spices while drinks and hors d’oeuvres roamed the room for guests including John Ratzenberg and Celeste Holm. In one corner, Jim, Nat Sherman owner’s Bill and Michele Sherman and Robin Bronck, CEO of The Creative Coalition, lively discussed the new Broadway hit show “Born Yesterday”, starring Jim, Robert Sean Leonard and the beautiful Nina Arianda.
